Cramp 6.1 Children of George Cramp and Kekiah (Kezia) Burgess.

Family of William CRAMP and Mary (CHRISTMAS)

William Cramp was the second child of George Cramp a powder maker and Kekiah Burgess.  He was born 10 October, 1842 at Bexhill (ref 151 SSX), parish of Crowhurst in Sussex.

Nothing is known of William’s young life.  However, it is known that he became a builder’s foreman, plasterer and married Mary Christmas at St Leonards in Sussex on 28 March, 1863 (ref 476 SSX).

Mary was born on 8 March, 1840, the fifth child of Trayton Christmas a farmer and Mary Ann SARGEANT.   In all there were 14 children in Mary’s family.

William and Mary emigrated to Australia in November, 1887 (though according to Williams’s death certificate c1886).  They arrived and settled in Lindsay Street, Hamilton Newcastle north of Sydney in NSW.

To Australia with William and Mary, came Mary Annie born 1863; William Frederick born 1866 died 1924; Montague Walter born 1874 and Karl Reginald born 1878.  Another child Charles Herbert Trayton born 1872 had however died just 7 months of age.

George Ernest the third child of this union born 1869 had emigrated to Australia some five months earlier by himself.

William, a plasterer died 30 June, 1894 Lindsay Street Hamilton (ref 6265/15) at the age of 51 years of Carcinoma of the Liver.  Mary died 29 July, 1909 aged 69 years in Sydney.  They are both buried in a family grave at Sandgate Cemetery in Newcastle NSW (Methodist No 1 fiche 14 page 28 Transcription No 352 grave No 13/15).

In the grave with them are their daughter Mary Annie and granddaughter Nellie Christmas Wonders (aged just four months).

The grave which has a large marble headstone is surrounded by a small wrought iron fence and though there are a few weeds is reasonably well kept.

Cramp 7.2 Children of William Cramp and Mary (Christmas)

Family of George Ernest Cramp and Mary Ann Eliza (Watkins).

My great grandfather, George Ernest Cramp at the age of 17 years, arrived in Sydney aboard the Orient line steamship "Iberia", of 4702 tons register.  The ship left the Port of London with J.W. Shannon as Master, arriving in Sydney in June, 1887.

He came alone, leaving behind his parents, family and friends on the 28 April, 1887, a journey which took approximately 2 months.  His ticket No 88 cost him 16 guineas and this allocated him an open berth No 240.  The original of this ticket was on public display in the P & O Museum offices in London, the museum now being closed.

George Ernest was born on 18th August, 1869 at Garland Road, Reigate Surrey in England.  His father was William Cramp, a plasterer and his mother Mary (Christmas).  George had four brothers and one sister.  William Frederick born 10 March, 1866, Montague Walter born 9 January, 1874, Karl Reginald born 21 January, 1878 and Mary Annie born 22 October 1864.  Also Charles Herbert Trayton born 19 May 1872, but he died Christmas day 1872.

In November, 1887 William and Mary arrived in Sydney from England with the rest of the family and settled at Hamilton in Newcastle north of Sydney.

Mary Ann Eliza Watkins, was born 11 May 1872 in Wolverhampton England, only daughter of Joseph Smith Watkins a plater and Hannah (Fowler) of Wolverhampton.  She arrived in Sydney two days before Christmas 1887 aboard the "Oroya" with her brother John Samuel Watkins.

George Ernest met Mary Ann Eliza and they were married on her 20th birthday in the Congregational Church (ref 23/4947 NSW) Illawarra Road, Marrickville a Sydney suburb.  On the marriage certificate their usual address at the time was given as 12 Engine Street, Sydney.

Engine Street, was originally called Victoria St, Ultimo and renamed in 1875 to Engine Street.  The name was again changed on 16 August, 1910 to Ultimo Road when a large portion of the road was incorporated into the site of the new Haymarkets.

The resolution by the Council of the City of Sydney on 16 August, 1910 reads "That the portion of Engine St, remaining after the erection of the new markets extending from George Street, to Thomas Street and terminating at Ultimo Road, be renamed Ultimo Road".

George Ernest was a Milk Vendor and Mary was engaged in domestic duties.   In 1893 on 5 June a daughter Mabel Annie was born.

My grandfather George Frederick Joseph was born 27 November, 1894.  The address given at his birth was 642 Harris Street, Ultimo.  Next door at 644 is a shop, possibly a business conducted by George Ernest (yet to be confirmed).  The house has long been demolished but the shop still exists though is vacant and due also for demolition.

On 24 February, 1897 George Ernest joined a Masonic lodge named "Lodge St Leonards No 98", which met at North Sydney.  It was whilst living at St Leonards that another son Montague Stafford was born on 7 June, 1897.  Tragically Montague only lived for six months when in the December he pulled a candle into his cot and was burned.

A third son Jack Stafford was born at North Sydney on 3 October, 1899 and 20 months later their fourth son Alfred W was born on 12 June, 1901.

In 1903 George Ernest was elected and installed as Master of Lodge St Leonards No 98.

The family moved to 27 Devonshire Street, North Sydney a house still standing today, and it was here that a fifth son Herbert Kelvin was born on 13 August, 1908.

Between August, 1908 and October, 1908 the family again moved to 75 Wentworth Road, Strathfield and opened a grocery store.  The store was on the southern corner of the "T" junction with Russell Street.  The building has long since been demolished and a block of units has been built on the site.

The original telephone number was "Burwood 584" but this changed sometime in 1915 to "U4585" and again some time later to "UA4584".

In 1914 on 12 August their second daughter Grace Mary Stafford was born.

With the onset of "The Great War" in 1914, times were very hard.  One son, George Frederick away at the war and five children to care for and a grocery store to manage.  Still the family survived and the grocery store flourished.

The family moved from the Strathfield residence sometime in 1924 and opened another store in Ashfield in conjunction with a Mr Smith, cnr Queen and Armstrong Streets.

They lived at 20 Trevenar Street, Ashfield.  Both the store and the house in Ashfield are still there today (1996).  Though the store is now owned by the RAAD Bros.

In 1927 George Ernest became a foundation member of the Lodge "True Friendship No 600", which held their meetings at Summer Hill.  George remained a member of both lodges until he passed away on 13 September, 1931.  He is buried at the Independent Cemetery at Rookwood NSW in grave No 1070 Section K.

According to probate No 178205, George Ernest was shown as a storekeeper late of Ashfield (his will dated 7/6/1914) with estate sworn at his death of 669/2/1 pounds.

The grave unfortunately is unmarked and considerably overgrown with vines and weeds.  It is my hope that one day to at least remember George Ernest with a white cross.

Of their 7 children, George Ernest would have had 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 19 great great grandchildren and six great great great grandchildren.  A total of 60 dependants, of these 49 are still alive today (November, 1996).  George Ernest was affectionately known to his grandchildren as "Fardy".

After George Ernest's death in 1931, Mary Ann Eliza moved to Lot 111 Dymond Street, Bargo, south of Sydney, with her mother Hannah Watkins (Fowler).  Mary lived in Bargo until her death on Christmas Eve 1953 aged 81 years.  A service was held on Boxing Day at St Pauls Church (2pm) and she is buried in an unmarked grave in the Church of England section of Bargo cemetery [R Wartens Funeral Director, Picton].   Hannah Watkins died in 1943 at the ripe old age of 98 years.

9.6     Herbert Kelvin Cramp and Elizabeth Condon

Herbert Kelvin Cramp born 13 August, 1908 at 27 Devonshire Street North Sydney, at age 28,  married 30 December, 1936 Elizabeth Eileen (Condon) born 15 September, 1909 Canterbury NSW.  Kelvin's usual residence at this time was 225 Commonwealth Street Sydney, he was shown as a Shop Assistant and Elizabeth as a Domestic Servant.

Elizabeth was the daughter of Edward Aloysius Condon a Grocer and Kathleen (Nash), her usual residence in 1936 was Kyle Pde Hurstville NSW.  They had one son Kenneth Graham born 25 September, 1940.

Kelvin and Elizabeth were divorced in 1944 and the sadness of this story is that Kelvin had no communication with his son from when Kenneth was about 3 years old.  The only evidence that a son existed not to mention a marriage was a photograph of Kenneth when he was about 2 years.

Kelvin regularly travelled the world on the P & O shipping line in particular aboard the Orsova and Oronsay.  Sometimes alone, other times with his older brother Jack Stafford.

Eileen refused to allow Kelvin access to Kenneth and alienated him from his father.  It was not until I began researching the family and located Kenneth that Kelvin learned his son was still alive (aged 47 in 1987).  Kenneth had no inclination to get to know his father at this late stage of his life even though photos of Kelvin were sent and he was advised where his father was living.

Kelvin could only say in response - "Well at least I know he is alive and well and if he is happy that is OK".

On the 23 February, 1995 Kelvin died aged 86 years (late of Lottie Stewart Hospital Dundas) and was cremated at Pinegrove Memorial Park 27 February, 1995.

When Kelvin died, it was a lonely broken man that wished he could just once have met his son and grandchildren - but that never happened.

Kenneth Graham Cramp married Kaye.
children Anthony John and Cheryl Anne.

9.2     Family of George Frederick CRAMP and Gladys SMITH

George Frederick Joseph - born 27 November, 1894 at 642 Harris Street, Ultimo NSW.  He was educated at Burwood Public School and Windsor Grammar School.  A motor mechanic by trade, he enlisted in the Army on his 22nd birthday in 1916 and was a private No 387 "B" Company 13th Battalion.

He embarked January 24th 1917.  War service - France, acted as a stretcher bearer for some time and was later transferred to the 13th Battalion band.  He remained with the unit until hostilities ceased.

"Laddy" as he was affectionately known,  whilst on service in England and living at Roseville, Chester Place Malvern Worcester, met Gladys Olga Dorothy (Smith), born at Clifton on Teme, Worcester UK 15 July, 1896.  She was the daughter of James Francis Smith a blacksmith and Mary Ann (Bullock nee Chad) and lived at North Malvern Road, Malvern.

They were married in the County of Worcester England two days before Christmas in 1918 (ref A17239/21UK). He returned to Australia and was discharged.

Gladys emigrated to Australia on the "CERAMIC", the first war bride ship to leave Liverpool England after World War I.  The ship arrived in Sydney 2nd October, 1919 carrying 485 AIF personnel, 304 women and 60 children.  It is assumed that George Frederick accompanied Gladys on this voyage though cannot be proven as the shipping records for the "Ceramic" did not list AIF personnel.

With Gladys came her daughter, Dorothy Mary (Smith) born 4 June, 1918.  Though not his blood child, George Frederick loved Dorothy as his own and was always known as her father.

George Frederick Joseph and Gladys had four children, Frederick Desmond born 26 March, 1920, my father Alfred Jack Stafford born 18 March, 1922 (ref 296 NSW), Norma Stafford born 11 February, 1924 though died on Remembrance day 1924 (11 November) of pneumonia aged 9 months.  Another daughter Mamie Stafford was born 10 April, 1927.

During World War II George Frederick was a WO2 and was stationed at Darwin NT.

Both Laddy and Gladys were active members of the Grand United Order of Oddfellows lodge and were welfare officers.  They were also caretakers of the original offices of the A.M.L. & F. situated at 4 Bligh Street Sydney.  They lived their last years at the Grand United Centenary Centre, Hammers Road Old Toongabbie until their deaths.

Gladys died on 6 April, 1970 aged 73 years and George Frederick Joseph died 15 August, 1976 both at Old Toongabbie and are remembered in the rose garden at the Centenary Centre.

Both are remembered lovingly by their grandchildren, as they could always find plenty of time to spread their love amongst them and take an interest in their every project.
