The "Allard" Family

ALLARD FAMILY

Family of Charles James Wakefield ALLARD and Adelaide Maude Helen ANDERSON

Charles James Wakefield Allard was born 11 August, 1861 at Chatham Greenwich in Kent UK.  His father and mother's names are unknown but father's occupation was an instructor in the Imperial Navy.

He arrived in Australia and was a member of the Victorian Naval forces and when the RAN was formed, transferred to this service.

On 4 June, 1887 at Melbourne Victoria, Charles married Adelaide Maude Helen Anderson a native of New Zealand born at Auckland on 16 July, 1870 (ref 230122 Auckland NZ).  They lived at Illawarra Street, Borough of Williamstown County of Bourke at least from 1890 to 1893.

They had 10 children, five boys and five girls, James Osborne (b1888 d1888/90), Adelaide Gertrude (b27 May, 1890 ref 16387/18612 Williamstown Vic), Ellen Maude (b1891 ref 38192 Vic), Sydney Childers (b24/7/1893 ref 27592 Vic), Charles H (b1897), Bronwyn C (b1899) and Alice M (b1907) and another daughter Lillian (b1907 d 18/8/1915 8 years) and two sons deceased.  The family then moved to Sydney.

Adelaide died May 31, 1932 at Sydney and two years after her death, Charles married Elizabeth Kirby at Newtown in Sydney and another son Ronald was born 4 May, 1936.   Charles died 25 June, 1945 at Willandra Private Hospital 19 George Street, Marrickville NSW (ref 10487 NSW - usual residence Newtown) aged 83 years of acute congestive carditis.  Both Adelaide and Charles  are buried together at Woronora cemetery south of Sydney (Lot 65 Section XX Anglican) with their son Sydney Childers, daughter Lillian and an unknown child Joyce Walker 2 years old (died 1918).

The double grave with a concrete edging originally had what appeared to be an aggregate top, a cross in the middle with a flower dome.  There was also a sandstone headstone at one end in the middle.  The years however, have not been kind.  The sandstone is severely weathered and the inscription unable to be read.  The grave is very overgrown with weeds.

Adelaide was the child of James Russell Anderson a merchant and Helen (Gallway).

Charles James Wakefield Allard's Navy record shows that on the 1 July, 1911 he was an Articifer Engineer and three months later, (1/10/1911) was promoted to Chief Articifer Engineer.

He received the 1914-15 Star, War Medal, Victory Medal and Returned Sailor's Badge for War Service.

He served         HMAS Cerberus  1-7-1911 to 31-8-1913

Sydney Childers Allard and Agnes Josephine Georgina Carter Brown

Sydney Childers Allard was born on 24 July, 1893 (ref 18253/27592 Vic) at Williamstown Victoria.  He was the 4th child of Charles James Wakefield Allard and Adelaide Maude Helen (Anderson).

Sydney, a news vendor lived at 26 Lincoln Crescent East Sydney with Agnes Josephine Georgina Carter Brown (nee Gray), a waitress and they married at Registrar General's Office Chancery Square Sydney on 28 January 1921.

They had eight children; Charles S (1919), Jean Phyllis (1921), John F [Jack] (1923), Nellie Muriel (21 October, 1926 ref 40739/26 NSW), Kevin Stanley, George Keith (1 May, 1929 ref 218 NSW) (residence on birth certificate as 124 McElhone Street, East Sydney), Edward Gordon (28/8/1940 Paddington) and another daughter deceased.

They lived at 57 Underwood Street, Paddington (inner Sydney).

Agnes Josephine was born 21 October, 1900 at 215 Goulburn Street, Sydney (ref 28589/2648 NSW) and according to her birth certificate was the illegitimate daughter of Mary Jane Brown (formerly Gray), [marriage certificate of Agnes and Sydney shows Agnes birthplace as Nabiac, northern NSW and age at marriage as 21 years - mother shown as Mary Jane Ryan deceased and father John Gray deceased - possibly this information to cover her illegitimacy].

I have since discovered that Mary Jane GRAY married Walter BROWN a moulder, born at Dunedin NZ on Christmas Eve, 1889 at Timaru NZ.  It is possible that Mary Jane and Walter BROWN separated or Walter died and Mary moved to Australia.  Unmarried and pregnant in 1900 was not a happy time for Mary Jane.  I have not managed yet to ascertain what happened between Mary & Walter.  Walter=s parents were James BROWN a bootmaker and Agnes (MCKAY).

When Sydney died four days after his 61st birthday (28/7/1954) and Agnes 7 December, 1959 they were both buried at Woronora Cemetery south of Sydney (Sydney - Lot 65 Section XX Anglican [with his parents and sister Lillian aged 8 years and an unknown female, Joyce Walker died 18/8/1918 aged 2 years] and Agnes Lot 365 Section 8 Anglican).

Agnes’ grave has a concrete and marble surround with a checkered marble top with flower bowl.  The headstone is marble with gold inscription and is in remarkably good condition.

Edward Gordon Allard

Edward Gordon Allard born 28 August 1940 at Paddington in Sydney NSW was the youngest child of Sydney & Agnes.

Edward (Ted) was a prominent Rugby League player.  He commenced his football career with Paddington Public School at the age of 14.

Because of his speed he went straight into the "A" grade side.  In 1954 he was selected in the Paddington School team that toured New Zealand and was the tourists leading scorer with 19 tries.  The tries were scored over nine matches of which they won six.

When Ted left school he joined the "Wharfies" Waterside Workers "D" grade team.  Here at aged 16 he was picked for the Presidents Cup squad as a winger.

Ted combined Australian Rules with Rugby League and played for Eastern Suburbs juniors.  He also was a competent boxer with East Sydney Police Boys Club, where Jimmy Carruthers learnt his boxing, but gave it up for football as he preferred to build up rather than waste for boxing.  During the 1957 season Ted had scored 43 points as a winger.  His main ambition was to wear the Australian jersey in a test match.

Ted eventually played first grade football for Balmain (Sydney) [Article from "Maritime Worker" 23/7/1957].

Ted married (1) Elaine (surname unknown) a son Craig born 23 November, 1962, Jason born 15 March, 1969 and Scott 11 January, 1971.

He then married (2) Marilyn June (Bain) born 17 September, 1950 on 26 October, 1974 and from this union Stacey born 26 March, 1976 and Dean born 6 July, 1978.

Ted and Marilyn live at Lake Munmorah north of Sydney.

Children of Sydney Childers Allard and Agnes (Brown).

Nellie Muriel Allard born on her mother’s birthday in 1926 at East Sydney NSW was the second daughter of Sydney Childers Allard and Agnes Josephine Georgina Carter (Brown).

For most of her young life, Nellie lived at various places until the family moved to 57 Underwood Street, Paddington (inner Sydney).  Nellie was the 4th child, having five brothers and two sisters.

Nellie was educated at a school in East Sydney and after a very unpleasant childhood constantly abused by her father obtained a court order to leave home at the age of 15..

She married Alfred Jack Stafford Cramp the day before her nineteenth birthday in 1945, in a modest ceremony at St John's Church of England Campsie NSW and lived at 2 Hugh Street, Belmore. (refer CRAMP AJS).

Nellie died 12 July 1983 at Camperdown Hospital of Massive Miocardiac Infarction, was cremated and interred at Rookwood Cemetery Memorial Garden 11/1.
